Amen To That!!!

I was recently reading one of my favorite industry mags (Studio Photography). While reading the editors note I let out a little Woo Hoo when I reached the end of the note.

Thank you Diane Berkenfeld for your insightful statements that fit right along with what I have been saying for years about the state of the event photographic industry. Below is a portion of her note.

"Perhaps its time to shift back to"formal" photography, educating brides and other purchases of photography that professional photographers are trained in their craft, experienced in doing the job right, and will provide them with quality images, prints and albums. Perhaps that's one of the differences that set a professional apart from the "wannabe"- the formal portrait, posed and lit correctly." (taken directly from Diane Berkenfeld's Editor's Note in the Fe. 2008 Studio Photography magazine)

Years ago when I first started seeing event photographers using the word photojournalist it rubbed me the wrong way. Now don`t get me wrong I know there are some true photojournalists out there shooting weddings but many of the photographers calling themselves photojournalists were really anything but. They were new photographers coming on the scene with no real experience, no formal training and no clue how to pose or use light so the only thing they could tout was their "journalistic approach" and use of available light.

To properly cover an event like a wedding you need to be able to capture the true candid moments using that "photo journalistic approach" (cringe)but just about anyone can do this if they fire off enough shots. Where the true professional shines through is being able to quickly and efficiently produce well posed and lit portraits. This is why I bring extra lighting with me to weddings. This is why I use a hand held light meter and take meter readings. This is why I have studied posing and lighting techniques for years and use both in an artistic way.

If you are a consumer reading this I encourage you to hire a photographer who not only is able to capture your most memorable fleeting moments but someone who is trained in creating formal portraits with artistic flair and then give that artist ample time to use their knowledge and artistic ability to create some awesome portraits for you.

If you are a photographer reading this and you aren't spending enough time learning about posing and lighting techniques go out there and get educated. I think we are going to start seeing the industry coming back around to putting more emphasis on portraiture and I will welcome it with open arms.
